Youth Leadership and Environmental Stewardship

ForestWatch and The Boys and Girls Club of Santa Barbara are working together on a new program that connects youth from disadvantaged backgrounds to the Los Padres National Forest. Through a series of educational camping trips, teens visit the most iconic places in the Los Padres, learn outdoor leadership skills, expand their career options, participate in stewardship projects, and gain a more significant understanding of what it means to be an active steward of the environment.

OUR MISSION

To build a stronger environmental movement by introducing youth with the most need to the life-changing effects of nature, while providing them with new tools to be leaders in their communities, and future advocates of our public lands.

AT-A-GLANCE

  • Group includes youth ages 13-18
  • Project balances topics of outdoor recreation, stewardship, environmental education, and civic engagement
  • Program consists of multiple camping trips throughout one school year
  • Participants meet once a week to plan future activities
  • Nature based professionals visit to share knowledge, serve as a role model, and expand understanding of career opportunities in Environment.
