Last month, ForestWatch partnered with Rio School District’s Summer Science Academy in Oxnard, to accompany a group of students to the forest for a day of learning, exploring, and connecting. The trip was intended to compliment the academy’s 5th and 6th grade curriculum, while providing an opportunity to experience this natural treasure we have in our backyard, explore the natural world, and spend time outdoors.
This was the first time visiting the area north of Ojai for most of the students, and for some—it was their first time visiting the Los Padres National Forest. They were greeted with an outdoor classroom activity that included an interactive taxidermy presentation by ForestWatch Conservation Director, Bryant Baker. Students expressed curiosity, excitement, and sometimes uneasiness about wildlife, but were able to recall the important role wildlife plays in the ecosystem from classroom lessons.
The presentation also included identifying poison oak which is prevalent in the forest, safety in the outdoors, and Leave No Trace principles.They were then led on a short hike that included a plant identification activity, and exploring (empty) Oak Galls made by wasps up-close.
There was a lot to experience in the area which transforms from lush green vegetation near the creek, to drier shrubs as you travel away from the creek and native plants that are visibly regrowing after the Thomas Fire. It’s a unique contrast and excellent opportunity to introduce fire ecology education to young students.
Research has shown that spending time in nature can increase academic performance, improve learning, and we believe also plays a strong role in establishing the next generation of nature stewards. ForestWatch is actively working to create more opportunities for youth and diverse communities to visit the forest.
